2 cl Bergamottensaft
2 cl Sirup (1:1)
1 cl Earl Grey infused Gin
3,5 cl Gin
+ Bergamottenzeste

Jan25: 10 years Later – Insight
Zeynep Tufecki über die Proteste in Ägypten.

During the Arab Spring, there was a terrible tendency in media to ask a stupid question: “Was it the technology or was it the people”? This made no moral sense, of course—when millions were pouring into the streets and risking so much. But it also made no philosophical sense, as if the technology did not factor into the conditions under which these uprisings were taking place—just like it had in 1848.In 1848, railroads (which are, indeed, communication technologies as well, as are all technologies that compress space and time by bringing us closer) and telegraph had changed the actual topology of how people and information were connected, which in turn changes the fabric of society. Faster and more are, indeed, different. This time, it was the internet, social media, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, cell phones with cameras. But it was, as it always has been, the people.

The Pandemic Is Resetting Casual Friendships – The Atlantic

In the weeks following, I thought frequently of other people I had missed without fully realizing it. Pretty good friends with whom I had mostly done things that were no longer possible, such as trying new restaurants together. Co-workers I didn’t know well but chatted with in the communal kitchen. Workers at the local coffee or sandwich shops who could no longer dawdle to chat. The depth and intensity of these relationships varied greatly, but these people were all, in some capacity, my friends, and there was also no substitute for them during the pandemic. Tools like Zoom and FaceTime, useful for maintaining closer relationships, couldn’t re-create the ease of social serendipity, or bring back the activities that bound us together.

It me.

Nur was?
Mein Gehirn ist Suppe. Schlick. Staub.

How the Brexit deal was done — and what happens next – Financial Times

“There will be no non-tariff barriers to trade,” declared Johnson on Christmas Eve. But that was not accurate, nor was it ever going to be. As Pascal Lamy, former head of the World Trade Organization, noted last year: “This will be the first negotiation in history where both parties started off with free trade and discussed what barriers to erect.”The bill for Johnson’s relentless focus on sovereignty is now due. The government’s deal does allow for the continuation of tariff-free trade for goods that qualify as British- or EU-made. However, Britain’s exit from the customs union and single market on January 1 created a thicket of customs declarations, health checks and other barriers to trade. Two of the biggest casualties were the food and drink industry and haulage and logistics operators. Both warned that imposing a panoply of border checks on the 10,000 trucks that came across the “short straits” between Dover and Calais each day would create immense costs and frictions on the just-in-time supply chains that had emerged organically during 30 years of EU single-market membership.

GameStop Stock Soars as Reddit Investors Take On Wall St. – The New York Times

On Wall Street, individual investors are often derided as “dumb money,” destined to lose against the highly compensated analysts and traders who buy and sell stocks for a living. But in recent days, individual investors — many of them followers of a popular, juvenile, foul-mouthed Reddit page called Wall Street Bets — have upended that narrative by banding together to put the squeeze on at least two hedge funds that had bet that GameStop’s shares would fall.

GameStop stock: How WallStreetBets massively drove up GME to stick it to Wall Street. – Slate.com
Zum selben Thema:

If this feels outrageous, it might only be because a bunch of supposedly unwashed Reddit users are involved. After all, GameStop isn’t the first stock to be subject to a giant short squeeze or to see its resulting value make little sense. When Porsche bought up a bunch of Volkswagen stock in 2008, short sellers scrambled to get out of their positions and briefly made VW the world’s most valuable company. It’s not clear why Porsche’s boardroom should have any more authority to dictate what happens in the market than a group of internet users operating in public view.

The Inside Story of How the Lowly PDF Played the Longest Game in Tech | by Rob Walker | Jan, 2021 | Marker

But the real key to the dominance of the PDF has less to do with its future than with its roots. From the start, it was meant to be lightweight and forwardcompatible, meaning the format would continue to be readable. And according to Adobe, even the very first generation of PDFs remain legible to its latest reader tools. This is a strength that again echoes analog inspiration: If you pick up a 100-year-old book, you don’t need to download any updates to read it.

Chronicles of a Bubble-Tea Addict | The New Yorker (via @LoBodingbauer – als Antwort auf den Bubble Tea im Zuckersüß von letzter Woche?)
Bubble Tea als Popkulturphänomen:

Riding the wave of upscale coffee bars, boba shops in the following years would proliferate, moving outside ethnic enclaves to claim real estate on main city thoroughfares. Before the pandemic engulfed New York, I liked to travel forty-five minutes from where I live now, in Harlem, to St. Marks Place, which boasted, at one time, six bubble-tea shops on a single block. I am well into my thirties, but in my sweats and sneakers I’d convince myself that I could pass for one of the Gen Z students who are increasingly the target boba demographic, even if the panoply of novel bubble-tea offerings felt increasingly estranged from the drink as I knew it. Why go to a boba shop if you want panna cotta, or chia seeds in place of tapioca balls? My favorite haunt, Mi Tea, a spacious, well-lit outpost of a Chinese chain, specialized in “cheese tea,” a viral sensation featuring layers of foamy milk and salty whipped cream cheese. The drink, which originated in a Taiwanese night market around 2010, costs anywhere between five and eight dollars a cup, but before the pandemic, when I’d hunker in Mi Tea working for hours at a time, I’d notice many orders abandoned half-consumed on unoccupied tables. This was an altogether different kind of waste than what Francie practiced with her coffee. Boba and I had spent our adolescence as scrappy, enterprising immigrants at America’s periphery. But it had evolved into something different: the boba shop was now a sort of social club for Asian youth, a snacky sanctuary of belonging, and bubble tea a ubiquitous, Instagram-friendly accessory for a new generation of upwardly mobile Asian kids.

Spotify (SPOT) Views Joe Rogan, More Podcasts as Path to Profitability – Bloomberg (via Sandro Schröders Newsletter)

The Joe Rogan Experience is Spotify’s most popular podcast globally, topping the charts in more than 15 markets, according to the company. Spotify shares rose more than 10%, to $175.01, the day it announced the deal. Wall Street sees Rogan benefiting Spotify much as House of Cards did Netflix Inc. When it began airing in 2013, the political thriller starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright attracted millions of new subscribers—and reduced Netflix’s dependence on rival studios, much as podcasts lessen Spotify’s reliance on Sony Music, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group.

S.a.: Der Text zur Sendung.
