Zuckersüß 539: Koloniale Fantasie, kommodifizierte Intelligenz, celebrity profiles

Einige Snackteller (z.B. Zucchini in Apfelessig, Dirndl-Oliven, Gurke, Spiegelei, Brot).

Gelesen

The Persistent Colonial Fantasy of Unveiling Muslim Women – Millle World

Earlier this month, French politician Julien Odoul decided that an anonymous Muslim woman was wearing too many clothes. The woman had been photographed in a hijab, long pink dress, headphones, and sneakers, looking about as threatening to the French Republic as anyone listening to Spotify possibly could. French MP Aly Diouara shared the image with the caption “Liberté,” which apparently did not sit well with Odoul, a spokesperson for France’s far-right National Rally. So he did what any perfectly normal politician concerned with women’s freedom would do (not) and used artificial intelligence to remove her clothes.

Commodified Intelligence.
That’s the phrase I’ve been trying to put a finger on for a while now.
The reason why dead-end so-called unskilled labor sucks is that you are fundamentally replaceable. The market enforces a pretty brutal equilibrium. White-collar jobs suck less because you are less replaceable, and maybe even get to convince yourself that your work matters, either for yourself or for society. You have some narrative arc attached to it that just isn’t there if you’re completely replaceable.

I used to get paid to hang out with famous people – Blackbird Spyplane (via kottke.org)

And to be sure, there used to be a glut of celebrity profiles, in the sense that the newsstand-sales-and-print-ads-fueled era of magazines generated way more of the stuff than the world wanted, much less “needed.” But as a profile-loving oldhead, it’s hard not to feel some dismay at the way video seems to be eating up all kinds of cultural forms whose excellence it can neither equal nor replace.

“I think if I started wearing suits to work, people would freak out,” he said. “Especially all the A.I. researchers. They wear sweatpants. Whenever someone can pull off wearing sweatpants to work, you know they’re doing something very important.

Silicon Valley’s embrace of Leopold Aschenbrenner as the “Nostradamus of AI” says less about Aschenbrenner’s predictive power than about Silicon Valley’s own desires and delusions. “A prophecy is a coherent narrative that depicts a whole world—not just a series of events, but a world in which those events happen to make sense,” Turner, the historian of technology, said. “It comes with a rationale. It comes with reasons, and most importantly for these guys, it comes with a role for this character called AI.” Aschenbrenner, he said, is “hubris meeting market need.”

Cooking for the Sharks – Cake Zine
Hier eine andere Seite des Überreichtums.

The waste generated from yacht trips is the hardest to swallow. A walk-in fridge bigger than my flat is filled with tens of thousands of dollars worth of protein, dairy, and produce before we disembark and topped up by exorbitantly expensive purveyors who deliver on small boats while we’re at sea. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are made each day, whether or not the guests feel like eating. And because the twenty-person crew has its own chef cooking three meals a day—usually a hearty spread of salads and grilled meats—there’s no staff to eat my leftovers and no space to store them anyway. Leftover food is literally thrown into the trash (or into the sea). I once tossed three roast chickens and two dozen oysters into the Port of Saint-Tropez when my clients decided at the last minute to eat on land—better, I thought, than letting them rot in the garbage room until we got to shore in four days. Later, I read that sharks know to follow superyachts around the ocean, waiting for truffle pasta and salt-baked branzino to drift down from the surface.

What It Means to Lose Autistici/Inventati – Internet Exchange

A shock went through the community of people that use A/I’s services. It’s a huge community. A/I has existed for 25 years and says that they hosted 20,000 blogs, 20,000 mail accounts, 5,000 mailing lists and 1,500 websites.
At this moment my blog is still online in  read-only mode. I have lost access to the administration. Soon it will be gone, and with it nineteen years of my writings on digital policy and rights. The same is true for the many other blogs and websites from many countries, on a huge variety of topics including climate change, anti-militarization, Indigenous rights and healthcare reform as well as Antifa. When it goes, many, many links from websites around the internet will lead nowhere. Once more, I’ve become the collateral damage of a terrorism accusation. And so have many other voices.

Canceling Emily – Ongoing
Tim Bray zum selben Thema:

I suppose most people reading this saw the Autistici/Inventati news story and shook their head at yet more MAGA malfeasance. Me too. But then I found out about Emily’s story, initially on her Fediverse feed, and that made it concrete. The wastrels in Washington can reach across the ocean and silence a Canadian creator on an Italian website. With no prior legal process, nor any way to resist, and without fear of consequences.
They can probably do the same to you if you displease them sufficiently. They’ve done it once now and from their point of view it went flawlessly, so why not again and again and again? The only reasonable prediction is that they will.
