Gegessen

- 5 points: https://fouuund.it/ – A charming site that prompts you to write your own poems from existing book pages and haikus from literature-based word banks. Inspiration can be found in the feed where others share their works.
- 4 points: https://cityofsound.nyc/ – This map portrays NYC’s urban landscape by sound and goes along with a newsletter that digs deeper into the city’s neighborhoods. A fun way to discover a city from afar (that I probably enjoy as much as I do due to my „déformation professionelle“ as a former radio journalist).
- 3 points: https://wifartgallery.com/ – Instead of asking for a password or presenting you with ads, this free public WiFi network asks you to draw something on your screen. I imagine this to make many people smile, both IRL in Hackney and those like me browsing online through the annotated gallery.
- 2 points: https://rothko.joonas.wtf/ – It seems like meteorological data is very popular with dataviz people. This project connects it to Rothko paintings – which turns out to be a surprisingly interesting way to make you think about and experience the weather in other places around the world.
- 1 point: https://trizuliak.com/experiments/hacker-news-waterfall – Hacker news keeps a very old school early web aesthetic, this site turns it into a waterfall which I find weirdly soothing to watch on my second screen. Would love to be presented with general news headlines in this way.
- In Every Language: Wie verschiedene Wikipedia-Sprach-Versionen Konzepte bebildern.
- Infinite Balldrop: Eine dämliche Idee, perfekt ausgeführt: Was wenn die New Yorker Neujahresdiscokugel jetzt schon starten würde.
- Since You Arrived: Was eine Webseite alles über dich weiß.

KP+ Polenta Focaccia & Ciabatta
Nicola Lamb macht Focaccia bzw. Ciabatta und bemerkt folgendes, was mich an meine alle-Focaccias-in-London-sind-super-ölig-Beobachtung denken ließ.
I had a realisation this week that the kind of focaccia I’ve been making for the last however many years— the super bubbly, airy version that is so popular in London and beyond (because it is delicious)… is…. Come closer… just dimpled, oily… ciabatta.
Ok, actually, I don’t need to worry about the Italian food police because the accusations aren’t aimed at them – they’re aimed at us. At Londonified bread.

🟧 A casual midnight omelette party for 47 – One Thing
The omelette party lasted until 3 AM, when our collective energy waned. No dishware was broken and our cat didn’t escape. Food didn’t run out, and even the pound of herbed butter and wildly sugary chocolate-chip cookies I baked got consumed. A friend told me she would be talking about this party for the rest of her life, so I consider this a success. Maybe the lesson here is: plan an absurd party, just to see what happens. Logic doesn’t need to apply; it’s amusement, after all. Grown-ups need to play around a little on the edges of their lives, too. I cannot necessarily recommend hosting your own omelette party, unless you are a professional.
Handgedacht!
“no ai” is really just invisible ai – wirres.net
Keine KI gibts nimmer, meint Felix Schwenzel:
Ethical AI Monogamy…? – default.blog
Gedankenexperimente über Mensch-KI-Beziehungen:
- The user says: This is my boyfriend..
- The AI performs: I’m your boyfriend.
- The company says: This is our adjustable product.
- China says: This degree of engineered dependence is ILLEGAL!
- Katherine Dee says: We should treat it as if it’s real, even if it’s not physically real: the bond is still meaningful.
By the by, China has actually started regulating attachment to AI companions. And this isn’t a speech censorship thing, either: new policies actually bar companies from nurturing emotional dependence in users. This includes a prohibition on virtual romantic and familial relationships for minors, dependence warnings, break reminders, and crisis interventions.
Tangerine-Tinted Tough Through-Times – Squalloscope
Anna Kohlweis über ihren Sommer in Kärnten und Wien.
Life is an oven and I am cake.
Life is an oven and I am potato.
Life is an oven and I am overcooked, moving sluggishly from fridge to bed to fridge to bathroom to fridge, I can’t add up my points in the card game can’t write song can’t draw picture can’t read book I fall asleep sleep sleep for twelve hours can’t protest can’t yell why aren’t they planting more trees and tearing up the asphalt everywhere, for fuck’s sake, but I am mashed potato and old cake
can only sleep
why aren’t they doing something
the big guys with the big money why aren’t they
why
is this a reliable strategy when all you want is for everyone to shut up?
I’m Over the Erewhonification of Fancy Grocery Stores – Eater (via Shutterbean)
The fancy grocery stores in whose aisles I’ve found respite in the past felt like places for food lovers, where burly, bearded cheesemongers sang the praises of ultra-funky washed-rinds as though they didn’t smell like actual feet. What I see on these postmodern shelves, though, is food less driven by curiosity and creativity than by fear. Fancy grocery stores have become a nexus for laundering conservative ideology under the compelling guise of pantry goods that are nice to look at. Sourcing, here, seems to matter more for the granularity of what a product does not include (i.e., seed oils), rather than any real investment in agriculture or farmers or local economies; the value of the small farm becomes the fact that it’s more likely to sell raw milk.
🟧 The banality of the video podcast – One Thing (via kottke)
Wie einfach jede Produktion gleich seelenlos ausschaut!
These writers are recording podcasts, audio records of the discourse of the day, a way to propel their work to audiences who are no longer happy to read. But in the era of algorithmically recommended shortform video the writers are also captured and broadcast in moving images, with all of their pained facial expressions and undisciplined hand gestures, their middlingly fashionable outfits, their millennially fried vocals. The stage sets of these video podcasts are carefully designed and curated, each lamp and accessory considered, whether a grand piano or a fiddle-leaf fig. […] The sets, installed with plentiful mics awaiting speech, are authoritative and yet unintimidating, like a friend’s renovated suburban basement. They frame the speech of the interview subjects or conversers, legitimizing it in this time of slop, imbuing it with an authenticity reinforced by the presence of their actual bodies, faces, voices. The upholstered chairs and bokeh-fuzzed interiors extending in the background imply a sense of trust. We are really here with you.
The Phone in Your Hand – Everything Machine (via The Verge Installer)
Diese Seite bricht verschiedene Erfindungen, die heute in jedem Smartphone stecken, sehr schön herunter:
Inside your phone, a stretched membrane (think trampoline, but with the diameter of uncooked spaghetti), vibrates with sound. The phone measures those vibrations as an electrical signal.
Speakers reverse the process. An electromagnet moves a larger membrane back and forth, vibrating air to create sound.
Modern smartphones hide two speakers along their edges and scatter six to eight microphones throughout: one at the bottom for calls, others near the camera for video, and some away from your mouth to analyse and cancel out background noise.
The year is 2063 and you were never interesting. – Liz Leatrice (via kottke)
Gegen das ständige ins-Handy-schauen:
Somewhere around your mid 20s, the memories stop. The window has become the door has become the room has become the entire house has become a window again. You have a portal in your pocket full of apps that are designed within an inch of their lives to take the best of you – your attention, your ability to focus, your time.
Your life is an orchestrated shuffle of technology. Your days are spent at work with the medium screen and you come home to unwind with the big screen; reflexively grabbing for the small screen every 2 to 7 minutes. Your screen time is 4 hours per day, 6 hours on the weekends, 7 if you’re hungover (you often are). It’s the midwest, after all. Fridays are for going out, Sundays are for boozy brunch. And repeat.
i quit reading and almost died – Sweater Weather
Part of the reason for my surprise has to do with the fact that I have accepted the reality that hard work does not mean that there will be a pay off for that hard work. I believe that this narrative is the most dangerous one for people like me. By people like me, I mean, well, black millennials from rural and working class backgrounds fed the idea that working hard at school would allow you to alter the material reality of your life. I was told by my family members and also by teachers and by the news and by books and by mentors—by the whole neoliberal world, it seemed—that working hard allow me to climb my way out of the rural south, and to become…I don’t know, middle class? The weird thing is that I did manage to do that, but the process was so fundamentally disillusioning that the only conclusion left to me was that the whole machine was a scam. Still, I had this thing internalized in me, this story about hard work and paying off, and I took it with me everywhere. Including into my artmaking. I thought if I worked hard enough, if I was disciplined enough, if I pushed myself and challenged myself and demanded of myself the highest excellence, then my work would be received a certain way. But that is not how anything really works. That’s not how it goes. But the process of learning that, again, in new, strict terms, was really devastating and painful and really embarrassing. So much so that the person I was before I learned that lesson…that person died.
Wish You Were Her – N+1 mag (via kottke)
But the lion’s share of them weren’t so finely biologically determined. The majority looked more like second or third cousins to their doubles. Staring at them yielded a whole other feeling, stranger than the vague awe you might harbor for folks obviously cashing in on their Darwinian dues. The faces of the not-quite-theres held a secret, focused serenity — kin to the quality inborn in the showman, dramatized by the spy, not far from the one on your casual adulterer. It was the flickering, only occasionally visible pact between at least two selves.
The Dolly Moment – Tressie McMillan Cottom (via Tom Schaffer auf bsky)
Über Dolly Parton’s öffentliche Persona im Spiegel der US-Gesellschaft.
As important as her songwriting is to her success, Dolly’s most important writing is the monomyth she stitched from Southern crises and American exceptionalism. She is a working class warrior who got rich, but no one hates her for it. She turned herself into a feminine ideal that trades in the most grotesque ideas of eugenic whiteness — pale skin, blonde hair, thin body, big breasts. Yet no one calls her out for being sizeist or ageist. And, she has remained Southern in affect and performance, while pursuing a non-Southern audience from the outset of her career. That she has held our interest so long and could still be relatively unblemished enough to ascend to an unproblematic fave in the sixth decade of her career is owed to Dolly’s craft — and to something more. Her performance of blondeness is a very particular thread of race and gender and class. How Dolly has gotten away with performing so many challenged identities while completely escaping critique resonates with audiences that consume the South precisely for the hope that whiteness still matters. As for the rest of us, well, we are here for the blonde ambitions.
