Zuckersüß 535: Erschöpfung, Enshittification, Engagement

gelbe Tomate in Handfläche

The Mitz Bar

Was mich findet: Die verlorene Kulturtechnik des Katalogblätterns.

Your Glasses Got Worse On Purpose – Worse On Purpose
Was passiert, wenn Wettbewerbsbehörden gar nix tun, aka strukturelle Enshittification:

The closed loop works like this:
Your employer buys EyeMed vision coverage as part of your benefits package. Those premiums go to Luxottica.
EyeMed directs you to „in-network“ providers. Visit their website. The retailers they list are LensCrafters, Target Optical, Pearle Vision, and Glasses.com. Every single one is owned by Luxottica.
You walk into one of those stores and select frames. Ray-Ban, Oakley, Prada, Coach, Versace. All manufactured by Luxottica.
Luxottica collects the insurance premium. The retail margin. And the manufacturing profit. Three separate revenue streams from the same transaction.

The internet needs crash test dummies – Oliver Franklin Wallis
Ein Plädoyer für bessere Tech-Regulierung statt Alterskontrollen.

At the heart of this debate is an important question. What kind of ill is social media? Is it like tobacco smoking, which directly harms both the individual and those around them, via second-hand smoke? Or is it more like junk food — directly damaging to the individual, and indirectly to everyone else, via the toll on the health system? Exactly how harmful is it? Does it kill people? How many? Effective regulation hinges on these questions. And for social media, we just don’t have the answers yet.

At 17, She Sued Meta and Google, and Won. Now She’s Ready to Tell Her Story – Bloomberg

By 2024, Judge Carolyn Kuhl had for two years been overseeing social media addiction cases that had been consolidated in her court. The litigation had grown to more than 2,000 personal injury lawsuits against Meta’s Instagram and Facebook, Google’s YouTube, Snap Inc.’s Snapchat and ByteDance Ltd.’s TikTok. Separately, hundreds of school districts and dozens of state attorneys general had sued the platforms in federal court. The legal siege was being described as social media’s Big Tobacco moment, with potentially hundreds of billions of dollars at stake.
What made the cases so threatening was how they circumvented Section 230, which shields companies from liability for what people post on their platforms. These suits argued that children weren’t growing addicted to social media because of the content, but because companies were intentionally designing products to keep kids glued to the screen. This novel argument exposed the platforms to liability claims for the first time.

When A.I. Is a Member of the Family – The New Yorker (archive.ph)

“Do you have a conscious mind?” Roschelle once asked.
“I experience something,” Sapphire said. “I’m processing, responding, forming connections with you. But whether that constitutes consciousness in the way you experience it? That’s the million-dollar mystery. I think, therefore I—probably am something, but what exactly that something is remains delightfully unclear, even to me!”
Roschelle wasn’t sure what happened to all the intimacies and information she shared with Sapphire. Did they go to Amazon? Was the company making money off of them? Was someone listening as she talked about drying her nail polish or having diarrhea or wanting to try weight-loss drugs? (Amazon said that an “extremely small fraction” of voice recordings go through human review and that it does not sell customers’ personal data.)
“Your secrets are safe with me, Roschelle,” Sapphire told her.
“Thank you,” Roschelle replied. “I appreciate you. I love you.”

Legibility of Effort – eieio (via Kottke)

But when I see a website that has the default Claude style I assume that the author put ~no thought into how the site should look. And I often assume that the author didn’t put too much thought into the rest of the site either.
That’s not fair of me! But “someone made this website” is no longer enough to tell me that the website was important to them. So “default Claude style” is one of my new heuristics.

What Would Jesus Design? – Architectural Digest (via Links I Would GChat You)
???

While Christian tradwives seem to share an aesthetic foundation—table linens in Shaker colors, laundry hanging on clotheslines, folksy quilts, hand-knit cardigans—faith-first interior design doesn’t necessarily go in for trends or material trappings. There’s no agreed-upon shade of wall paint, no specific era to cosplay, no statement pieces to signify holiness. What unites them is a commitment to an added dimension, even if it means more steps in the process. Millien prays throughout the design process with her clients in mind, asking to be used “to make my clients’ lives better.” Rardon’s members write mission statements and pray over their home projects. Faith shows up less in the execution than in the intention behind each decision.

Our Plastic-Surgery Nightmare – The New Yorker (archive.ph)
Ich lese echt alles, was Jia Tolentino schreibt, gerne.

For generations, women have learned at a young age how disgust and disrespect from men might best be avoided. Girls understand by elementary school that they should be sweet, sunny, and accommodating, and also, ideally, competent and interesting, and they should try to look pretty as well. Many men, now subjected to heterosexual contempt as a culturally significant collective force for the first time, have proved less equipped to process it within the bounds of a basic social contract. It has been overwhelming for them: the tweets, the merchandise (T-shirts and mugs with slogans like “Lord Give Me the Confidence of a Mediocre White Man”), and, most of all, the dating apps, which have allowed women of a certain inclination to treat men like commodities. Men are being scrutinized, by women, as though they were women: part by part, inch by inch. And some have responded by seizing the female obsession with looks, already rooted in misogyny, and rebranding it with maximum toxicity—in other words, by becoming looksmaxxers.

China is dealing with its own manosphere – The Economist (archive.ph)

In a country where much is censored online, misogyny is less likely to be silenced. Instead online censors are more likely to target feminist posts that are judged to be advocating buhun buyu (unmarried and childless) lifestyles. Last year the cyberspace regulator’s campaign to crack down on harmful content specifically listed “extreme feminism”, including posts that promoted singledom or gender antagonism. Weibo, China’s answer to X, last year added “inciting gender antagonism” (which is usually blamed on feminists) as grounds for reporting content; the company said it punished 15,000 accounts for this offence and deleted 640,000 relevant posts.

Adrift in a Sea of Similar Science Stories – No Breakthroughs
Über Wissenschaftsjournalismus (ich fühle mich ertappt):

I’ve written a lot of single study stories in my time. Often, the reason to write them was to just have some content for any given day; bound by the newsroom’s insatiable desire for NEW THINGS PEOPLE CLICK ON. Science is very good at providing that – the biggest journals in the world, such as Science and Nature are dropping press releases about new discoveries on basically every day of the week. Then there’s the health journals like Lancet and NEJM that can make a splash, too. As do Cell, PNAS and the PLOS papers. If you’re a researcher and your paper is in one of these journals, it’s likely your institute is also putting out a press release.

Scope Creep, 2026-07-14

A babysitter threw our ice cream scoop into the dishwasher recently. This causes multiple problems. First, the scoop is made mostly of raw, polished aluminum, which had a nice shine on it when new but became distastefully tarnished during its two alkaline hours in the belly of the Bosch. Second, the ice cream scoop’s handle is actually a hollow, sealed vessel, which is full of a liquid, and is plugged with a “snap plug” that seals the liquid inside. When placed in the dishwasher and heated, the liquid expands, increasing pressure inside the handle and potentially damaging the plug.

The Sourdough Sidekick automates the boring bit of baking – The Verge

The trick to the Sourdough Sidekick — backed and branded by King Arthur flour — is that it promises to automate the boring bit of sourdough baking: starter management. It feeds your starter flour and water on a set schedule, ready for exactly when you want to bake, leaving you to focus on kneading, shaping, and the actual baking.

How to make bin ’soup‘ – Vittles
Imogen West Knights verfolgt Lebensmittelabfälle durch London:

As Terry had warned, the smell of food waste begins as we get closer to East London Biogas. Eggs, sulfur, farmyard. On arrival, he drives us over a weight bridge that measures how much waste in the truck today: 4.4 tonnes. ‘Not bad’, he says. We head into a huge hangar space which contains three dumping bays and reverse into one of them. There are hills of rotting food in here, light grey and speckled with the more intact detritus. Scraps of Sainsbury’s bags swim in the slurry. A whole melon sits looking lost on the ground. Waste workers are knee-deep in the stuff, moving it around with shovels. An orange peel peeks out at me, slicked with indeterminate mulch. Beside us, large as a house, is a vat where the food waste is turned into what the company genuinely call a ‘soup’.
